ISCI INITIATIVES IN TIMES OF COVID

Since the beginning of the crisis, the Complex Systems Engineering Institute (ISCI) has put all its knowledge and capabilities into helping contain it. Its initiatives include:

Remote Patient Monitoring Station

The remote patient monitoring station contains easy-to-use patient devices that record and process biosignals: heart rate, O2 sats, patient core temperature, and respiratory rate. Additionally, the system autonomously detects atmospheric temperature and humidity. All of these signals are encrypted and transmitted securely to the healthcare center, displaying them on a dashboard, which is currently in its final phase of development. The dashboard can trigger alarms when a patient presents worrying vital signs.

Multiplying testing capacity: RT-PCR Pool Testing

Since the beginning of the crisis, ISCI and doctors from the Faculty of Medicine of the Universidad de Chile have proposed the use of pooling techniques in the processing of PCR samples, that is, using a single PCR test for a group of people (5 or 10, or more). The main advantage of this technique is that it reduces both the number of scarce resources (PCR tests) and the delivery times of results, without affecting the sensitivity of the test.

Optimization of Hospital Treatment Capacity by Critical Care Personnel

This project has several subcomponents. (i) Design of work shifts to maintain critical attention capacity by minimizing the probability of contagion with a viewing platform that facilitates operation. It is dynamically optimized as contagions appear. (ii) Traceability to identify personnel at risk of contagion (iii) Failure to carry out strategic group testing (iv) Putting fans on-line for remote assistance to field staff.
